LARA WAS GAZING at the predawn red sky, where she sat near the smouldering fire. When she saw a flash of a portal opening near to the camp. A light breeze sending Eida’s scent her way. Lara leaned over to Carn, where he slept beside her, waking him up gently. Then turned her attention to the witch as she walked over.

Eida smiled warmly. “Good morn.”

Carn nodded a greeting as he stretched his stiff limbs, yawning. Lara stated, “Glad you could find us.”

The witch sat down opposite them both; she glanced around at the open plain. “This is very deserted.” She studied them. “It surprised me you weren’t staying in the town.”

Lara shook her head, looking north. “Not the most welcoming of places.”

Eida sighed. “Aye, this entire island isn’t the most welcoming. Gor to the north is the most civilised here. But once you get south of the Black Mountains, it is more challenging.”

Carn asked, thinking about his theory when they arrived. “Do you think it is anything to do with where the crystal originated from?”

“Aye,” Eida said, looking south towards the mountains. “I can sense the evil from here.”

Lara had to agree. She had sensed it for a few days, the draw of it becoming stronger the closer they reached the mountains. With her heightened sense of being a hybrid, Lara wondered if she were more attuned to it. It seemed to even seep down into her bones. Yet could that be because of chasing it for so long or that they were getting closer to its source? She would be glad once she destroyed the crystal.

She turned to Eida when she asked, “So, what is the plan?”

Lara glanced across at Carn as he took his packed things across to the horses. She stated as she rolled up her sleeping blanket. “Not sure yet. I want to see what we are going to be facing. The primary plan is, with your help, to destroy that crystal for good.”

Eida responded, “I have what I need, but will have to borrow some of your magical properties, Lara, to fulfil it.”

Lara raised an eyebrow. “How will you take them?”

“Just from my touch.” She gazed across at the mountains. “Yet that isn’t what is concerning me. My instincts feel that whatever we face will be a challenge. So, we all need to be on our guard.”

Carn regarded the two women as he saddled Lara’s horse. “Well, my sword is ready.”

The two nodded and Eida said, “And it will be needed. I do not know how much control the woman will have with the crystal. She may conjure creatures or only be able to use the power of illusion. But she has been exposed to it for some time, so I am fearing the worst.”

Lara took a deep breath and placed her packed things on her horse. “Then we will be ready.”

Leaving the camp behind, they rode slowly south towards the mountains. Carn let Eida ride his horse while he walked alongside. Lara asked as they all looked ahead.
